Okay, Let’s jump into the main topic, shall we?
Top 5 Laptops for Doctors in 2019
1. Apple MacBook Pro
The Apple MacBook Pro is stylishly designed which is very attractive. It is as minimalist as possible with very little fluff. This is one of the laptops that will be an aesthetically pleasing addition to your desk and lift you up in moments of fatigue and exhaustion.
Also, an essential aspect this MacBook’s design is that the touchpad is large enough and with space on both sides to rest your palms you can efficiently scroll and zoom in to X-rays, USGS, MRIs, and CT Scans.
The MacBook Pro comes with a wide-enough 15.4” screen and the brilliant Retina Display set apart due to its True Tone Technology which brings images and colors to life. This is one aspect of the MacBook that will please you instantly.
This laptop has an i7 Processor (8th gen), and the Radeon Pro 555X graphics with 4GB of video memory. It also has a super fast 256GB SSD. All this means the ability to perform multitasking smoothly.
The laptop is very slim and it weighs just 4 pounds (1.8 kg). It can be carried anywhere easily which will come handy as doctors are rarely stationary. You won’t even need an extra bag to carry this beast.
We know doctors need to relax and have fun too, so gaming often tops the cards for leisure in the medical profession. The MacBook Pro can be connected easily with an external GPU to give even professional gamers a mind-blowing gaming experience.
The ports on this MacBook Pro should satisfy anyone who generally uses Apple devices and accessories as it comes with four Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports. This means you have the ability to transfer data at 30GB/s.
Another feature that will come handy is the fingerprint scanner on this MacBook Pro. You can chuck passwords and have password-less entry into your laptop, your secure folders, and even online accounts. It also allows you to make payments more quickly.
The battery life for the MacBook Pro goes up to 10 hours. This should be sufficient even on a busy day particularly if you don’t always have access to a charging station or if you are posted in a rural area and don’t have an uninterrupted power supply.
Though the MacBook Pro is quite expensive compared to other Windows laptops, it’ll be worth your investment. If you have a higher budget to buy an premium laptop, then I would definitely recommend you go for this amazing laptop.
At last, I just want to say this is a very good laptop for a doctor which can do anything.
2. Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon
The Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon is one of the lightest laptops you can get on the market right now. It is perfectly suitable for doctors while moves around a lot and don’t want a heavy laptop.
Its 14-inch display with 500 nits offers a glossy high-quality experience and is wide enough to let you multitask in office when you have windows stacked side by side or when you want to enjoy some entertainment while browsing medical literature.
The processor on this X1 Carbon is the Intel Core i7-8650U and it comes with 1TB SSD making it a very powerful laptop capable of multi-tasking and running the most sophisticated medical applications.
The Intel HD graphics won’t let you down either as you can visualize intricate details of bone and tissue on 3D and 4D scans of your patients using software that allows you to analyze X-rays, Bone scans, Pet Scans, MRIs etc.
As I said in the beginning, the laptop is very lightweight and weighs only 0.7 lbs (0.3 kg). This is the lightest laptop on this entire list. Forget the need to take old fashioned notes on paper and then transfer them. Instead, you can instantaneously take notes and add comments to your patient’s files as you do your routine round and check-ups every day.
And for those of us who just keep plugging in things to their laptop, this should make you happy: X1 Carbon comes with 2 USB-C (Thunderbolt 3) ports, 2x USB 3.0, a 4-in-1 MicroSD card reader and lest we forget the HDMI port.
Yet, there’s more: Backlit Keyboard- check, fingerprint reader- check, think shutter camera- check. A ThinkShutter camera is a shutter that sits on your camera just in case. This gives you peace of mind as a doctor as your patient’s privacy is an ethical concern.
Overall, This is a very good laptop for doctors in my opinion.
3. Acer Aspire E 15
The Acer Aspire E15, although not a favorite among laptop enthusiasts, can be an amazing laptop for doctors. Personally, it is one of my favorite laptops which I have talked about many times on this site because it is one the best value for money laptop at just $600.
Overall, the laptop is sturdy and designed to be rugged and resistant to wear and tear. This is so important for doctors who work under very demanding and often harsh conditions.
With a huge screen (15.6”), this laptop allows medical professionals to stack several patient reports and tests side by side and even multitask while they work through their busy routines. This also allows you a wide enough view of X-rays, MRIs etc.
An Intel Core i5 8250U with 256GB SSD and 8GB DDR3 will work well for you if you do not need to run very demanding applications. Lightweight multi-tasking shouldn’t be a problem. Besides, this laptop has very good battery life. It can last up to 10 hours with moderate usage.
It also comes with lots of ports: a USB 2.0, USB-3.1 Type-C port, two USB 3.0 ports, VGA input, HDMI port, Ethernet port, and a Kensington lock. The SD card reader is at the front.
Now about the weight. At 5.3 lbs (2.4 kg), this laptop is quite heavy. Carrying this laptop would be difficult without a laptop bag. You should keep this mind.
4. Microsoft Surface Pro
The Microsoft Surface Pro is stylishly designed and integrates the freedom offered by a tablet with the power of a laptop. It is also as minimalist as possible. Again, this is also a lightweight and portable machine which might be very helpful to you.
What makes this tablet as powerful as a laptop is the core i5 Processor with 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD. At the same time, one great advantage of tablets over laptops is that you do not need to switch them ON. For a doctor, it is impossible to switch a device ON and OFF repeatedly during rounds. You simply keep the Surface Pro running and charge once in a while- much like a mobile.
The tablet is ultra-light and portable and will never slow you down on your daily routine. Unlike laptops, you don’t have to worry about a carrying bag or feel discouraged by its weight. It can be in your hand all day where ever you go.
While there is a stigma often attached with tablets that they are not as powerful as laptops or not efficient for typing, you can invest in a type cover (set of both keyboard and mouse) officially offered by Microsoft itself which will be quite useful for you.
The limitation of ports on this Microsoft tablet can be an issue as it just has two USB Type-C port. However, with the appropriate adapters, you can virtually connect it to any device.
The battery life for the Surface Pro is normally 6 hours when used heavily and goes up to 13.5 hours during moderate use- which is amazing for a tablet. This should be sufficient particularly if you find it difficult to charge your device multiple times a day. Simply plug it in after your workday and enjoy the next day with all the tab’s powers.
5. ASUS ZenBook 14
This ASUS ZenBook is a 14inch ultra-slim laptop that boasts some serious military grade technology. It is very well designed and resists various drop tests- something that is inevitable in a crowded hospital environment where you are running around to help patients.
Its 14-Inch wide view full HD display is amazing and will give you crystal clear view of images and videos. The bezel of the screen is very minimal and particularly stylish.
Also, what makes this laptop a powerful work station is the 8th generation Intel Core i7-8565U Quad-Core Processor (8M Cache, up to 4.6 GHz) along with 512GB SSD and16GB LPDDR3 RAM which is very powerful and can handle multi-tasking and running large programs simultaneously.
Asus has offered a decent number of ports on this machine i.e one USB 2.0 port and 2 USB 3.0 ports and Micro SD card reader.
As an additional feature, it comes with Windows 10 Home as well as the Windows Hello software. In combination with the built-in IR Camera for facial recognition, Hello lets you sign in with facial recognition. This enables passwordless entry that is faster and more enjoyable.
Moreover, the laptop is more ergonomic for typing for longer periods of time due to the Ergo Lift design. This means you can now prepare manuscripts for medical journal publication without straining your wrist or fingers too much.
The futuristic dual-function touchpad is a wonder at it transforms into a numeric keypad- this is quite a new and unique feature which will be helpful for many doctors like you. Also, the backlit keyboard allows easy typing in dimly lit patient rooms, wards, operation theatres, and ICUs.
The battery life can be an easy stretch up to 9 hours when used in an optimum manner which is quite impressive I would say.
Though there are many important and valuable professions in the world Doctors is one of the top and important one because they save and help the lives of their patients. This is the reason you shouldn’t go for a cheap laptop and only get the best laptop for doctors by investing a decent amount of money. A good laptop will surely last for a longer period than a cheap one.
