I’m assuming you have joined a nursing school recently and you have a feeling that you may need a Laptop to do some important tasks like research and take notes etc.
If that feeling has brought you here, then you have landed exactly in the right place.
I’m going to tell you which laptop could be suitable for you and which laptops you should ignore while picking the one for yourself.
I have gone through a list of 50-70 laptops and chose only top 8 of them. In this post, I’m going to talk about eight Best laptops for nursing students which really provides value for its money.
Without any further ado, Let’s get started.
Top 8 Laptops For Nursing Students in 2020
1. ASUS Chromebook Flip
Chromebooks are becoming a common device for any students these days and that’s the reason I’m suggesting this good laptop for a nursing student.
If you are hearing the word “Chromebook” for the first time, then let me tell you that it isn’t a regular laptop like you would expect.
It doesn’t run either on Windows or OS X. It runs on an operating system called Chrome OS made by Google for Chromebooks.
I just want to tell you TWO things about a Chromebook and I’ll talk about the Asus Chromebook Flip in details.
What does a Chromebook do?
Chromebooks mostly depends on a internet connectivity to able to perform any tasks such as using Google Chrome, Gmail, Google Drive etc.
What a Chromebook can’t do?
You can’t install third-party games and software such as Microsoft Word/Exel, Photoshop etc. You can easily find a replacement for any third party software such as Google Docs, Adobe Lightroom in Chrome Web store.
Okay. Enough about a Chromebook definition and If you still have any doubts, then you should read this Laptopmag Guide to clear the air.
Let’s talk about the Asus Chromebook Flip now.
Generally, a Chromebook comes at a cheaper price compared to any other laptops but that’s not the case with the Asus Chromebook flip. Asus has priced this laptop around $500 because of its premium build quality and great specifications.
It has an all-metal body and you won’t find plastic anywhere near the body. The laptop has full HD touchscreen display with the resolution of 1920×1080. This display is decent to use in indoor condition but it isn’t the best display to use in an outdoor spot such as ground, parks etc.
The display has the RGB rating of 75% and the Adobe RGB rating of 58%. As the name of the laptop itself reveals that you can flip it at any angle. You can use the laptop in a 360-degree such as tablet or laptop mode.
When it comes to memory, it comes with 64GB storage and 4GB RAM. The processor inside the Chromebook you’ll find is Intel Core m3. You can easily run multiple tabs on chrome, open Google docs or any others tasks at once, you won’t face any problems while doing multi-tasking on this machine.
This Chromebook weighs only 2.65 lbs (1.2 kg) which is easy to carry anywhere especially from home to school/ college. A lightweight laptop is always a good thing to have for nursing students.
Port selection isn’t very great I would say. There are 2 USB Type-C (one on each side) and a Micro-SD card slot. The keyboard and trackpad on this laptop are average but the thing I liked about the keyboard is, it has a backlit which will be useful while using the laptop in late nights.
The 39 watt-hour battery on Chromebook Flip can easily last up to 8 hours on a single charge. This is the most important thing for any students I would say. You need to have a laptop with a long-lasting battery to bring it to school or college without any battery worries.
You should watch the below video to know more about the Asus Chromebook Flip.

2. MacBook Air
If you have a good budget around $1000, then I would say MacBook Air one of the best option for you. If you are looking for cheaper laptops, then don’t worry, scroll down this page you’ll find many good options for you.
The design of the MacBook Air hasn’t changed a lot from a couple of years but I would say in 2019, the design of the laptop is fairly decent. One major issue which hasn’t been fixed since 7 years is its outdated display. It has the same 13.3 inch LED display with 1440×900 resolution.
The display of the laptop, Okay but viewing angles are very poor. But there is a good news for Apple. There are rumors that Apple may launch a new cheaper version of 13-inch MacBook Air with Retina display in the upcoming WWDC event in June 2018. If you want a better display in MacBook Air, then you can wait.
Despite having an Okay display, there are some good things about having a MacBook Air. I’m going to talk about 2 major benefits because I don’t want to bore with my long posts.
1. Performance: This laptop doesn’t have the latest processor. It comes with Intel Core 5 with 8GB LPDDR3 RAM. As you may already know the MacBook Air runs on Mac OS X which is optimized better than many Windows laptops and you’ll experience the smoothness of performance while using the OS X.
This laptop comes in 2 variants i.e 128GB or 256GB SSD. Both variants perform very well. You should pick yourself which variant would be suitable for you.
2. Battery life: Just like I said before, a long-lasting battery is must for every student and MacBook Air have even better battery life than the above Chromebook flip.
Apple claims, it can last up to 12 hours but you know what the surprise is here? Laptopmag has confirmed that MacBook Air has lasted 14 hours in the battery test. That’s is the reason I have included MacBook Air on this list. This laptop can easily last a full day in school/ college with a single charge.
Another thing worth mentioning about the MacBook Air is it weighs just 3 lbs (1.36 kg). This is slightly heavier than the above Chromebook but in general, it is a very lightweight laptop I would say.
3. Dell XPS 13
The Dell XPS lineup is no secret because everybody knows that it is a lineup of high-quality products from Dell. The Dell XPS 13 which I’m going to talk about is a late 2017’s model but with Intel’s latest processor i.e Intel 8th Generation Quad-Core i5-8250U.
There aren’t a lot of changes except the CPU in this laptop. This is a slightly cheaper version of XPS 13 which costs around $900. I won’t be recommending you the latest Dell XPS 13 9370 which was released in early 2018 because it costs double the price than the XPS 13 9360.
The XPS 13 has a 13.3-inch touchscreen infinity display with a matte finish on it. The fewer bezels are pretty attractive and that is one of the main highlights of this amazing laptop. The display produces good color contrast and viewing angles on this laptop are excellent I would say.
You’ll find aluminum in the body of this laptop and carbon fiber in the area of keyboard and trackpad. The build quality is sturdy on this machine and there is nothing to complain about.
When it comes to memory, Dell has offered 128GB M.2 SSD and 8GB DDR3 RAM which is adequate to run multi-tasking with ease. The performance on this machine is top-notch and the latest Core i5-8250U is a nice improvement from its previous generation i.e Intel Core i5-7200U.
The keyboard and trackpad are one of the best in the business I would say. The port selection for this laptop isn’t bad at all. There are 2 USB 3.0, 1 USB Type-C (Thunderbolt 3) and full-sized SD card slot. An additional useful feature about this XPS 13 is it has a fingerprint reader to unlock the screen. It hasn’t mentioned on Amazon but buyers have appreciated this feature anyway.
And finally, the battery life. According to Telegraph, battery can last up to 12-15 hours but I would it say safe to assume a 10-hour battery life on average. A 10-hour battery life in a powerful machine like this is a very good job by Dell I would say.
Overall, the Dell XPS 13 is one of the best laptops for nursing students without any doubt.
4. Asus Vivobook 14
This Asus Vivobook is a budget laptop from Asus which costs around $400. Based on the specs and the quality, this is one of the top laptops for a nursing student.
The Vivobook comes with 14-inch full HD TN panel which is sharp and bright but it won’t impress you with its viewing angles. This is the third laptop on this list which doesn’t have best of the viewing angles. If viewing angles don’t bother you much, then I would say this is a good option for you.
The bottom of the laptop is made out of plastic but the lid and keyboard/trackpad area is made from aluminum. Just to let you know, there is a fingerprint reader in the top corner of the trackpad. It is pretty rare to see a laptop with a fingerprint scanner at this budget.
The laptop comes with 128GB eMMC storage and 4GB DDR3 RAM. The eMMC is quite slow compared to an SSD but a nursing student may not find a face any performance unless you push it to an extreme level. The Vivobook comes with Intel Pentium N4200 processor which is made for lower-tier laptops and not for power users. You should keep this in mind.
The Asus Vivobook 14 weights just 3.3 pounds (1.5 kg) which is fairly portable I would say. The ports available on this laptop are 1 USB 2.0, 1 USB 3.0, 1 USB Type-C (Not Thunderbolt), HDMI and full-sized SD card slot.
One of the best things about this laptop is its battery. Asus claims the battery can last up to 12 hours but it isn’t 100% accurate. According to Lon TV, the battery can last up to 9-10 hours which is extraordinary for a $400 laptop. If you are looking for a laptop with long-lasting battery at this price range, I would say this is an ideal choice for you.
If you want more information about this latpop, then you should read this reivew by Philip C. Cody on Amazon which is quite in-depth and useful.
5. Acer Aspire E15
If you are looking for a cheap and value for money under $400, then I can bet you that no other laptops come nearly to this beast. In fact, this Acer Aspire E15 costs only $350 and it is the best selling traditional laptop on Amazon.
The design and look of the laptop aren’t stunning. It has a simple design which justifies its price. The laptop is made out of plastic and doesn’t feel cheap at all. It has 15.6-inch full HD display which produces decent color contrast and viewing angles.
This laptop comes with 1TB 5400 RPM HDD along with 4GB DDR4 RAM. You may be thinking that this laptop will perform slow but it’s not. This laptop performs reasonably well but If you want faster performance from this machine there is a quick fix to that. You can add 8GB extra RAM in an open slot offered on this laptop. It’ll cost you only around $100 and it’s worth it.
Note: There is a higher-end variant of this laptop available which will cost you a little over $200 than this laptop. If you have a budget around $600, then I’ll definitely recommend you that one because that variant comes with 256GB SSD, 8GB RAM, and GeForce MX150 graphics. You can find that variant here. This is probably one of the best laptop below 700 dollars you can get.
This laptop weighs 5.3 pounds (2.4 kg) which is quite heavy and not easy to carry on the go. If you are getting a laptop to carry it to your school/ college, then it may not be the best choice for you. Acer has offered a backlit feature in this cheap laptop which is pretty rare to see.
Acer claims to have a 12-hour battery life on this laptop but Laptopmag confirms that you can easily 8 hours battery life by surfing the web and other general usages. A $350 laptop with 8 hours of long battery life is a pretty amazing deal I would say.
I’m really impressed by the quality of this laptop and I would recommend this best laptop for every nurse practitioners out there.
6. Acer Chromebook 15
If you have a very tight budget and want a laptop to do basic stuff of studies, then the Acer Chromebook 15 is your best option right now because it costs less than $250 from your pocket.
The build of the laptop isn’t exactly premium but it is made of plastic which feels sturdy and you can’t complain about the plastic build at this price. The display is 15.6 inch IPS panel which is very good and it has decent viewing angles too.
The storage on this laptop is 16GB SSD which isn’t quite enough for the majority of the people but this is a Chromebook and it can easily do a lot of things in those 16GB data. If you are concerned about the memory of this laptop, then you should consider getting the Asus Chromebook Flip which I have talked about earlier in this post.
The Acer Chromebook 15 comes with 4GB DDR4 RAM along with Intel Celeron Dual-Core 3205U. The performance on this Chromebook is just phenomenal. It easily manages to handle multi-tasking without any issues. The laptop comes with dual-band 802.11ac wireless technology which performs exceptionally well without having connectivity problems.
If you are getting this laptop for both educational and entertainment purpose, then there is a good news for you. The speakers on this laptop are quite loud for a $250 laptop. I haven’t talked about speakers of any of the laptop here but I have to mention that this laptop has quite loudspeakers which is pretty impressive at this price.
This Chromebook is not very lightweight because it weighs 4.8 lbs (2.17 kg). You can carry it in a bag and bring to school but it’ll be slightly heavy for some students. The ports selection on this Chromebook has been mediocre. You’ll get 1 USB 2.0, SD card reader, USB 3.0 and HDMI on this machine.
The battery life of this laptop has really impressed me. You can easily get 5-6 hours on a single charge with low to moderate usage. I must say this is really a value for money Chromebook which will be suitable for people who doesn’t have a good budget.

7. ASUS ZenBook UX330UA-AH55
If you are looking for an ultrabook which is cheap, lightweight, powerful and stylish, then the Asus Zenbook UX330UA-AH55 is your best bet.
The Asus Zenbook UX330UA-AH55 is an all-metal laptop which has a premium build quality and stunning design. The screen is 13.3 inch full HD IPS display with a matte finish. The screen gets brightness enough but it should have been better. The sRGB rating of the display is 96% whereas Abode RGB rating is 75%.
This laptop also falls under the category which doesn’t have greatest of the viewing angles.
The laptop comes with 256GB M.2 SATA SSD which is extremely fast. The SSD of this laptop boots up the system in less than 10 seconds and performs every task smoothly. The read and write speed of the SSD are 530MB and 504MB respectively. If you want even faster performance, you can actually upgrade the SSD.
The 8GB DDR3 RAM manages the tasks easily and inside the laptop, you’ll find the Intel’s latest 8th gen processor i.e Intel i5-8250U. This is the same processor which is available in the above Dell XPS 13. This processor is capable of doing some heavy tasks without any hassle. You can edit some 1080P videos and play some older games like league of legends and CS:GO.
Note: This laptop was released earlier in 2016 and in 2017 it was refreshed with Intel’s 8th gen processor. The 7th gen model is still available on Amazon but it’ll cost you $200 than the newer version. Don’t get the older one and instead buy a newer one and save $200.
Another great thing about this laptop is, it is extremely lightweight and weighs 2.6 lbs (1.17 kg). Asus has provided every essential port on this machine. You’ll find 2 USB 3.0, 1 USB Type-C, an SD card reader and mini HDMI port.
The keyboard has a travel distance of 1.5mm and very easy to type on. The keyboard has backlit and there 3 levels to choose from. The gloss trackpad works fine but it isn’t better than the XPS 13. Asus has offered an additional feature i.e fingerprint the trackpad area which is always a nice to have on any laptop.
The battery life on this Zenbook is outstanding. Justin has confirmed that you can easily 11 hours of battery life with lightweight usage. 11 hours of battery in a powerful laptop like this quite impressive I would say.
If you want more info about this Zenbook, then headover to DigitalTrends and read the complete review. Overall, I would this good laptop for any nursing student who have a decent budget.
8. Microsoft Surface Pro 4
You may already know this is obviously neither a budget nor a cheap laptop by any means. If you don’t know already the Surface Pro lineup is a series of premium laptops offered by Microsoft which is perfectly suitable for any college students and that’s the reason I have chosen this laptop here.
The Surface Pro 4 is a 2-in-1 touchscreen laptop which is lightweight and easy to carry anywhere. The body of the Surface Pro is made of magnesium casing which is sturdy which really justifies its price.
It has a 12.3-inch Pixelsense display with the resolution of 2736 x1824. The display gets really bright and it has a great viewing angle too. The Pixel Per Inch (PPI) of this display is 267 which is quite impressive.
You can view the display of this laptop in any angle with the help of kickstand which Microsoft has offered on this laptop. This will be really useful stuff especially for a student like you while taking notes on a class.
Another useful thing offered on this laptop is Surface Pen to take notes and draw anything. There are shortcuts like clicking the back of the pen will open the one note and double-clicking will take a screenshot. These shortcuts might be handy especially for a student.
If you have majority of the tasks related to writing, then I have suggested some good laptops for writers.Do check it out If you are interested.
Note: This Surface Pro 4 is an older model. The latest Surface Pro doesn’t’ come with Surface Pen. You’ll need to purchase it separately. Keep this in mind while purchasing.
The performance of this machine is amazing. It comes with 256GB SSD and 8GB RAM. You won’t get the latest processor on this machine but still, the 6th Gen Intel Core i5 can easily handle any type of tasks flawlessly. The read speed of the SSD is 608MB whereas the write speed is 113MB.
One of the thing which I personally don’t like about this Surface Pro 4, you need to the type cover ( set of keyboard and trackpad) separately. It’ll cost you around $100. There is no doubt about the quality of the type cover. It is great and works pretty well but selling it separately isn’t a good idea at all.
There are 5-6 levels of backlit to choose from in the type cover which is obviously a good feature.
Without the type cover, the Surface Pro 4 weighs only 1.7 lbs (0.7 kg) and along with the type cover, it weighs 2.34 lbs (1.04 kg). No other laptops on this list weigh as lightweight as the Surface Pro 4.
The battery life on this Surface Pro 4 is pretty mediocre. You’ll be getting 5-6 hours of doing simple tasks like Word/ Excel, Chrome etc. While playing some games, you’ll get around 2 hours of battery life.
Laptop Buying Guide for Nursing Students:
I have already talked about many good laptops for nursing students here. But If you haven’t found your perfect choice yet. This you can find it yourself by following this little guide.
This is a very important aspect of every laptop you should check before getting a laptop. You should never buy a laptop with a hard drive unless you have a very small budget. If you have a budget more than $400 or $500, then you should always go for a laptop with SSD drives. It’ll perform way faster than a normal hard drive.
You shouldn’t go for a laptop which has less than 128GB SSD except for Chromebooks. 128GB data would be enough to install some important software and save some of your personal multimedia files such as audio, video, photos etc. You can always go for more than 128GB but don’t go below that.
Aim for Core i5 processors If you have a good budget. It’ll perform faster than a Core i3 processor and it won’t cost you a lot. If you have a minimal budget, then core i3 laptop would be just fine for you. I won’t suggest you a laptop with core i7 processor for nursing school as it’ll cost you more and a nursing student may not need such kind of high-power laptops.
If you are getting a laptop for multipurpose such as nursing school, entertainment, gaming etc, then you can go for a core i7 laptops. If not, then I would suggest you go for core i3 or core i7 machines and save your money.
You shouldn’t choose a laptop with 2GB RAM at any cost because it can’t manage too many stuff at a single time. Always go for a 4GB RAM models and it won’t cost you much. My personal choice for the cheap best 4GB RAM laptop would be Acer Aspire E15. I’m repeating again, never ever go for a 2GB RAM model.
No matter what, every student wants to own a lightweight and portable laptop and that’s what I’ll suggest for nursing students too. 6 out of 8 laptops on this list are lightweight and portable. You can choose any of them.
The ideal weights of the different laptop sizes are,
1. 10-12.5″= Up to 2.7 lbs (1.22 kg)
2. 13″= Up to 3 lbs (1.36 kg)
3. 14-15″ = Up to 5 lbs (2.26 kg)
Of course, a lightweight isn’t mandatory for every student but it is for your own good. More lightweight the laptop is, more easy to carry it to school or college.
3. Battery Life
This has to be the most important aspect of a laptop for a student who takes his/her lappy to a school or college. You should never buy a laptop which has less than 6 hours of battery life. If you aren’t going to take your laptop to school/ college and using it in the home, then you may not have any issues.
MacBook Air has the best battery life of 12 hours on this list. You should choose it if your top preference is a long-lasting battery.
4. Operating System:
Both Mac OS and Windows would be just fine for nursing students. You should get an advice from your teaching about the software requirement and what OS would the best for you. And based on that, you can make your decision.
I won’t be debating about Which OS is best for you. Both Windows and Mac OS has its own Pros and Cons. MacBooks are generally expensive but it gives a different type of performance whereas you can easily get a Windows laptop at a very cheap price.
So these are very important thins should consider before getting a laptop for a nursing student. There are many other aspects to look but those aren’t important as the above one. If you are curious to know about those additional features, then here are are they.
1. Display type– IPS VS TN Panel (IPS is better in most cases)
2. Screen Size– It depends on your choice.
2. Graphics card– If you are an avid gamer, you should get a laptop with a dedicated graphics card. None of the above laptops have dedicated graphics card. You should read my post here where I have talked best gaming laptops with the dedicated graphics card.
If you have came here till this very end, then I’m sure you have may have got the right idea How to choose a laptop for a nursing student. These days every student is busy with studies and doesn’t have the time to do a proper research about the gadgets they buy and that’s the reason I’ve written this post to help them choose the right laptop.
These are the 8 Best Laptops For Nursing students in 2019. I’ll try to update the post when I find any other valuable laptop for you. If you have suggestions, don’t hesitate to share with us.
