Top 7 Laptops For Stock Traders in 2018

 1. Acer Aspire E 15(8th Gen)- Best Affordable Laptop for Trading

Acer Aspire E 15 8th Gen

If you are a beginner in this field and don’t have the budget like the rich ones, don’t worry because now you are looking at a $600 laptop which can do the job like a $1000 one.

This is a 15.6 Inch laptop which has full HD IPS display with decent color reproduction. It may not be the best-looking display but for this budget, you can’t expect more than this. I’m assuming, a stock trader may not have the top preference for display. If it is, you can check out some other options which have great display than this one.

It has 8GB DDR4 RAM which is adequate to run Google Chrome, MS word/ excel, Multimedia and more. I’m assuming you’ll be getting a laptop for those types of usage but If you are getting it for some heavier tasks, then you can double the RAM by adding in an additional slot which is available.

The CPU inside the laptop is 8th Gen Intel Core i5-8250U processor which is a nice improvement from Intel Core i5-7200U Processor.

The 256GB SSD performs fast and boots up the system under 10 seconds which is pretty impressive. If the storage is not enough you, you can add an HDD/SSD in an additional slot just like the RAM. Acer has done seriously a good job by providing these upgradeable options.

This budget laptop has a dedicated graphics i.e GeForce MX150 which is an entry-level GPU capable of play some casual games like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, League of Legends and Minecraft. But you shouldn’t really expect it to play some hardcore game because you’ll need to pay more for that.

Tip: The Acer Predator helios 300 would be a good choice if you are both trader and gamer.

One of the best things about this laptop is it has a Backlit keyboard which is pretty amazing because most companies don’t offer a backlit keyboard at this price range but Acer has provided this amazing feature at a very low cost. There are 1 USB 2.0, 3 USB 3.0 and an SD card reader available on this laptop. This is a decent port selection in my opinion.

And lastly, the battery life. Acer claims it can last up to 15 hours but in reality, that’s the case. Martin has confirmed that from basic to medium usage, you can expect 8 hours of battery life which is really good I would say.

I have no hesitation to say that this is one of the affordable and top laptop for trading.

 2. Apple 13″ MacBook Pro- A perfect laptop for a Stock Trader

Apple MacBook Pro

If you have the budget over $1k, then I’m sure this could be the perfect choice for you. I have already told in my previous posts that Apple laptops are one of the most reliable laptops on the market and that’s the reason I’m suggesting again.

I know that you are a stock trader but even if you are a Writer, Software Developer or any other profession, MacBook Pro will perfectly fit your needs and requirements.

This is the 13′ MacBook Pro model which has 13.3′ inch IPS LCD display with the resolution of 2560×1600. This is one of the best 13-inch display you’ll find on the market right now. The display is crisp, bright and the viewing angles are excellent.

The latest MacBook Pro comes with the Touch bar which could be useful sometimes but not a lot of people use that. I assume a stock trader won’t have time to play with those touch bar but instead, you can use the touch ID feature to unlock your laptop or make any online payments.

This laptop comes with 128GB PCIe based SSD which can easily perform at least 5-8 times faster than a normal hard drive. Your laptop will perform smoothly if you are using an SSD and most of the Apple laptop comes with pre-installed SSD on their laptop. That’s the reason Mac’s perform a lot faster than many other Windows laptops which comes with the hard drive.

It has 8GB DDR3 RAM and the CPU inside this machine is 7th Gen Intel i5 processor. These specs are capable of doing multi-tasking such as browsing, watching videos and even some light gaming.

Tip: Apple laptops are not known for its hardcore gaming and If you are looking to get a laptop for stock trading and gaming both, I have a separate post for you.

One of the major reason to get MacBook Pro is, its battery life. Apple claims that it can last up to 10 hours but users have confirmed that it can easily 8-9 hours by lowering the brightness. This is a good thing for a trader because you don’t need to worry about the charging while dealing with the numbers.

3. Lenovo Y700- A Gaming Laptop for traders

Lenovo-Y700 15 inch

This is one of the best laptops for both trader and a gamer. Even If you aren’t a gamer you’ll get an amazing performance from this beast. I have previously shared my views on this laptop in one of my earlier posts.

For a Stock trader, I’m going to explain to you How this laptop would be a good choice for you.

This is a 15-inch laptop from Lenovo which is pretty much suitable for everyone and even a gamer can enjoy some hardcore gaming with GTX 960M dedicated graphics card which is not available on the MacBook Pro.

There is another model available for this laptop with 17′ screen on Amazon. If screen size is your top priority, you can choose that over this 15′ or else there isn’t any difference is the specs of the laptop.

The build quality of the laptop is excellent. The top and bottom of the laptop are covered by aluminum and the rest of the body is made of plastic. At this price, the build quality is reasonably well made I would say.

It has double the RAM from the above MacBook Pro i.e 16GB DDR4 and quite a newer processor i.e Intel’s 6th Gen i7 processor. A stock trader can do their work as fast as they can with this fast-performing processor. It isn’t the latest processor out there but it is not the worst either.

If you skipped the MacBook Pro because it had 128GB, then this laptop has something more to offer you. It has extra 1TB Hard Disk memory along with 128GB SSD to store a lot of data which is good enough for a stock trader.

The Lenovo Y700 weighs 5.7 pounds which are 0.8 pounds more than the MacBook Pro. If you are working from home or any particular place like office, you won’t have any issues with this. If you have to travel a lot with your laptop, this laptop may not be suitable for you.

It has a decent battery life of 5-6 hours while surfing the web or doing any basic tasks. For a stock trader, You’ll be getting at least 4 hours average battery life which isn’t bad at all.

Specs:
  • Screen Size: 15.6 Inches.
  • Storage: 128GB SSD+ 1TB HDD.
  • RAM: 16GB DDR4 RAM.
  • Processor: Intel Core i7 6700HQ

4. Razer Blade Stealth- A Beautiful UltraBook For Trading

Razer Blade Stealth

If you are looking for a slim and lightweight ultrabook for your trading work, you are looking at one of the best options in the market right now.

The Razer Blad Stealth is quite expensive but surely its worth spending your money on a premium laptop whose build quality is top-notch and it weighs less than 3 pounds. Yes, you read it right. It weighs only 2.93 lbs (1.32kg) which is very easy to carry on-the-go.

The laptop comes in 2 different screen sizes i.e 12.5 inches and 13.3 inches. For a stock marketer like you, I would recommend you to go for the 13.3′ inch model because you have to deal with the numbers and you can’t do it with a smaller screen in the 12′ inch version.

One of the main thing people will notice in the new Razer Blade Stealth is the fewer Bezels. The older model of this laptop had huge bezels and people were annoyed by this thing and now Razer had listened to their customers and cut down the bezels by 50% which is pretty impressive.

Take a look at the difference yourself below,

Razer Blade Stealth 2016 VS 2017

The Razer Blade Stealth has one of the beautiful looking display just like the MacBook Pro. The display also has a touchscreen which may not be very useful for a trader but you can use it sometimes if you want to. The QHD display quality is amazing and it has the sRGB rating of 98%.

Razer Blade Stealth Display

                                         Razer Blade Stealth Display

This is the black version of the Stealth laptop. If you are interested to get it in any other color, there is also a grey version of this laptop.

The performance of this beast is phenomenal. It has 16GB DDR4 RAM which is double the RAM from its older model and it is paired with Intel Core i7-7500U. This laptop is capable of doing some heavy tasks like video editing and playing games at decent frame rates. The Geekbench 4 score of this CPU for the single core is 4181 and the multicore score is 8317.

The laptop comes with 3 different storage options i.e 256GB/ 512GB/ 1TB SSD. The price will vary based on the selection, So choose that’s your preference.

In my opinion, this could be one of the best laptops for day trading.

Important note:

Most people think that this Razer laptop is a gaming laptop. This is one of the biggest misconceptions and I want my readers to know that this isn’t a gaming laptop.

Of course, Razer is a company which is known for making gaming products but this laptop isn’t what you are thinking. This laptop has integrated Intel’s HD 620 graphics card which can play games at decent frame rates but it can’t come nearly close to a dedicated GPU ]

I think I have clearly mentioned about the gaming part of this laptop but If you still want to play games on this laptop, then here is a good news for you. You can play games on this laptop by connecting an external GPU via Thunderbolt 3 port but it’ll cost you a lot more.

There is a customizable RGB backlit keyboard which is good enough for your profession who have to deal with the numbers a lot and the glass track works fine with Windows precision drivers.

And lastly, the Battery life. A stock trader who is mostly doing tasks like web surfing and research can expect the battery life of 7 hours. For medium to heavy users, you can expect 3-4 hours which is above average I would say.

You can also read the full Review of Razer Blade Stealth on WindowsCentral or watch their video below to learn more about this laptop.

5. ASUS ZenBook UX330UA- The Best UltraBook For Stock Trading

Asus-Zenbook-UX330UA

This is one of the cheap and best ultrabook you can get anywhere on the market right now. Compared to the Razer Blade Stealth, the ASUS ZenBook UX330UA costs more than half of the price.

This isn’t the latest laptop from Asus because was released in late 2016. The newer model of this laptop is also available on Amazon but I’m going to talk about the older one because it is cheap and still worth considering.

The aluminum body makes the laptop more premium and doesn’t feel cheap at all. Just like the Razer blade, it comes with 13.3 inch IPS display with a matte finish. The display produces good colors and it is decent but It should have been better. The sRGB rating of the display is 96% whereas the Abobe RGB rating is 75%.

The Zenbook comes with one storage option i.e 256GB M.2 SSD and 8GB DDR3 RAM. Along with these, it comes Intel’s i5 processor i.e Intel i5-7200U. The only thing which you can upgrade on this laptop, the M.2 SATA SSD drive.

Even though you can’t upgrade the RAM, you’ll be getting an amazing fast performance on this laptop. You can open multiple tabs on your browser, play multimedia with ease. You can also do some lightweight video editing and can play some old games at low settings with Intel’s HD 520 integrated graphics card.

It one 3 levels of white backlit in the keyboard which could be useful while doing work in the nights and glass trackpad is just okay but not great.

Apart from the good things which I mentioned above, the two major benefit of getting this laptop is portability and battery life.

In the title of this laptop, I have mentioned that it is the “best ultrabook” for this profession because it weighs only 2.6 pounds (1.17 kg) which is extremely lightweight and you can easily carry it with anywhere without any laptop bag at all.

Asus claims the battery life to be 12 hours and Justin have confirmed that it can come close to 11 hours with lightweight usage. Not bad right? With the lightweight to medium usage, you can expect close to 10 hours which is pretty extraordinary battery life.

Specs Recap:
  • Screen Size: 13.3 Inches.
  • Storage:  256GB SSD.
  • RAM: 8GB DDR3 RAM.
  • Processor: Intel i5-7200U.
  • Graphics card: Intel HD 520.
  • Operating System: Windows 10.
  • Weight: 2.6 lbs.
Pros
  • Extremly lightweight.
  • Long battery life.
Cons
  • Display quality should have been better.

6. Dell XPS 15 (2017)

Dell XPS 15 201

There are plenty of options for a 15′ inch laptop on the market these days but the one laptop which really stands out from the crowd is Dell XPS 15 2017  because it provides great value for its money.

This is one of the top laptops for stock trading from Dell for sure.

The laptop was introduced by Dell in January 2017. I may have suggested you get the Dell XPS 15 2018 model which was announced at CES in January 2018 but it is not available in the market so I’m going to talk about XPS 15 2017 because it is not that older and worth considering for sure. The design hasn’t changed a lot from its previous 2016 model expect few minor ones.

So the Dell XPS 15 comes with two display i.e 1080P and 4k and both models come with a 15.6-inch screen. I would suggest you go for the 1080P model because the 4k variant will reduce the battery life up to 30-40%.

The major difference between other laptops and the XPS 15 is its InfinityEdge display. The thin bezels and a shining display make the laptop more attractive and beautiful from many other laptops. There are only a limited number of laptops available on market now with fewer bezels and the XPS 15 is the surely in the top of it. The viewing angles of the laptop are also great.

As a trader, If you are picky about the screen of the laptop I have a quick suggestion for you. Both the 15 inch MacBook Pro and XPS 15 has an equally great display but the XPS 15 will cost at least $1000 less than the MacBook Pro. So choose the option wisely.

Another important thing about the XPS 15 is Performance. This laptop is suitable for both daily usage and gaming because it has the dedicated graphics card i.e GTX 1050 4GB VRAM which has 30% faster performance than the previous GTX 960M.

The CPU is also the powerful one i.e Intel Core i7-7700HQ which is capable of handling multiple heavy tasks with ease. The 16GB DDR4 RAM is more than enough to process browsing, streaming, gaming and even video editing. I would suggest you go for the 512GB SSD model because, in the 256GB variant, you’ll get only 8GB RAM.

The touchpad of the XPS 15 is one of the best in the entire market and the chicklet keyboard works great. And finally, Dell claims the battery can last up to 8 hours but the tests have confirmed that with basic to moderate usage, you can expect 7 hours which is really admirable.

Specs Recap:
  • Screen Size: 15.6 Inches.
  • Storage:  512GB SSD.
  • RAM: 16GB DDR4 RAM.
  • Processor: Intel Core i7-7700HQ.
  • Graphics card: GTX 1050 4GB VRAM.
  • Operating System: Windows 10.
  • Weight: 4.5 lbs.
Pros
  • Amazing infiniteyEdge display.
  • Suitable for heavy tasks and gamng.
Cons
  • None.

7. MacBook Air

Apple MMGG2LL/A MacBook Air

The MacBook Air isn’t the latest and greatest laptop out there but there are a couple of good things are available on this laptop and that’s the reason I have included this laptop on this list. If you skipped the MacBook Pro because of its high price, then this is the perfect alternative for you which costs less than $900.

This is a 13.3-inch laptop which has the of 1440×900 which is pretty unusual these days. The design and display of the laptop are stunning but it hasn’t changed a lot from past 6-7 years which is really disappointing. One of thing which I liked about this laptop is it’s All Aluminium body which feels really solid and premium.

Another thing which is really impressive about the MacBook Air is its Portability. It weighs just 3 pounds (1.36 kg) which is perfectly suitable for people who are mostly on the go. Even though it is a slightly outdated machine, you can’t ignore these good things about this laptop.

The 8GB DDR3 RAM with 5th Gen Intel i5 processor is more than capable of browsing, MS word, Streaming online and other basic tasks. Just like the MacBook Pro, don’t even expect to play hardcore games on this machine.

One of the things about MacBook Air which concerns me is storage. It has only 128GB SSD which could be okay if you are getting this laptop only work but you can’t really store your personal data like movies, files in just 128GB. So you should really think twice about this before getting this one.

The most important and useful feature on this laptop is its Battery life.

If you are looking to get a laptop for basic tasks and long battery life, then the MacBook Air can fulfill your wishes. Apple claims it can last up to 12 hours and PCMag had confirmed that it had lasted more than 17 hours on their battery drain test and LaptopMag had also confirmed the battery had lasted 14 hours which is really extraordinary and a commendable job by Apple.

Even If you play some heavy tasks, you can expect at least 8-10 hours of battery life which means you don’t carry your charger If you are working in an office, school or college.

Specs Recap:
  • Screen Size: 13.3 Inches.
  • Storage:  128GB SSD.
  • RAM: 8GB DDR3 RAM.
  • Processor: 5th Gen Intel i5.
  • Graphics card: Intel HD Graphics 6000.
  • Operating System: Mac OS Sierra.
  • Weight: 3 lbs.
Pros
  • 10 hours battery life.
  • Weighs less than 3 pounds.
Cons
  • Outdated display technology.
