Before we get into the details, here are some of the important specs of MacBook Air.
This is MacBook Air (2015 model) which comes with 13.3 Inch LED display without Retina display. Just to remind you, MacBook Air doesn’t have Retina display in any models.
As of April 2016, All MacBook Air comes with standard 8GB RAM instead of 4GB RAM and 128GB SSD flash storage.
It weighs less than 3 pounds and the thickness of the laptop is under 1 inch which makes the laptop ultra-thin and easy to carry on the go. This is one of the light-weight and slimmest laptop you can buy on the market right now.(See below image).
Ok. Now I won’t bore you with all the features of this laptop. Just like I said before here are the 3 Key features to get MacBook Air for your writing profession.
If you want to know more benefits of the MacBook Air, check out the full specifications of Amazon.
3 Major Reasons to get MacBook Air:
1. 10 Hours of Average battery life.
10 hours of battery life in a laptop is insanely awesome and I’ll tell you why you need a long-lasting battery on your laptop for your writing profession.
“If you have a long-lasting battery in your laptop, you can easily focus on your writing task instead of worrying about the charging your laptop every 2-3 hours”
With a single complete charge, your laptop can last up to 1 full working day (10 Hours). Isn’t cool?
If you are okay with charging your laptop every 3 hours with any other laptop, then you may not have any problem. But if you are like ME who wants to use the laptop on a single charge, then MacBook Air is the perfect choice for you.
2. Can handle any type of multitasking.
Apple’s MacBooks are known for its multitasking ability and MacBook Air is no exception at all.
Even though you are a writer, still you may need to perform tasks like Photo editing, Video editing, online research etc. And MacBook Air can help you perform those tasks without any issues except gaming.
(If you want a laptop for both writer and gamer, then you should consider buying gaming laptops like Asus ROG, Acer Predator because MacBook Air isn’t famous for its gaming)
P.S: Follow this healthy thread on Quora to understand why gaming in Mac isn’t great.
Coming back to the performance of MacBook Air, it comes with 128GB SSD which is several times faster than normal hard disks. If you don’t know what is an SSD, then you should definitely watch this amazing video by Linus.
Along with 128GB SSD, the 8GB LPDDR3 RAM makes the MacBook Air blazing fast to perform any kind of multitasking.
So now you know the 2 major reasons to buy MacBook Air and here comes the last and important aspect of the MacBook Air.
3. Stable and Smooth Operating System:
Indeed Windows is the most widely used operating system in the world and there is no dispute about that. But when it comes to productivity and multitasking Mac’s OS X is way better than Windows.
Here are the 2 reasons why I’m telling you this,
1. Stabilization: Sometimes Windows pc may get crashed due to some software bugs or incompatibility of the hardware because Windows isn’t the only manufacturer in the world who build Windows laptops/ desktops.
But when it comes to OS X, Apple being the owner of the OS knows how to stabilize their OS with suitable hardware.
So in this case, Apple has a clear advantage over Windows.
2. Optimization: Of course you need the best hardware to handle heavy tasks in a laptop but optimizing the OS is also very important part of it. And that’s exactly what Apple has done with their devices for many years.
Mac OS is very clean and optimized to run any kind of software smoothly without any crashes.
These are the 2 main reasons why OS X has the advantage over Windows when it comes to productivity.
If you look at any workstations, you’ll see most people will be using MacBook over Windows laptops because of the productivity. Writing career is no different from any other jobs and that’s why I’m suggesting you get MacBook Air for your workstation too.
If you are a long time Windows user, you may be hesitating to buy MacBook Air because of the new operating system. That’s completely fine. But once you get used to it, you’ll never regret it for sure.
If you are considering to switch from Windows to Mac laptops, then here is detailed video guide by Beebom for the first time Mac users. It’s very helpful.
Or you can read the official guide by Apple to move from Windows.
I hope till now you’ve got your answer that why I’m suggesting MacBook Air as one of the best laptops for any writers. You can read all the Specifications of this laptop on Amazon.
Ok So now you have read all the benefits and features of the MacBook Air. Now to make things easier for you, I’ve made a list of GOOD and BAD of this laptop so that you can decide whether to buy this product or not.
Bonus tip: There is no cheaper alternative for MacBook Air because usually, MacBook lineup is quite expensive. If you are a Windows guy, then the next laptop will be perfectly suitable for you.
2. Asus ZenBook UX330UA-AH54: A MacBook Air Alternative for Windows guy
If you are not a fan of MacBook and OS X, then here is the perfect alternative for you which costs under $700.
This Asus ZenBook is the perfect competitor for MacBook Air 13 inch. But there are some areas where Asus ZenBook is way ahead of MacBook Air and that’s what I’m going to tell you now.
This is one of the best laptops for any type of writers and affordable laptops for programmers, video editors and more.
The Asus ZenBook comes with same display size as MacBook Air i.e 13.3 inches but unlike Air, Zenbook comes with Full HD IPS display.
It has an entire aluminum body (except bottom) and just like MacBook Air, the thickness of this laptop is under an Inch.
The storage of the laptop is 256GB SSD which is double the storage of MacBook Air which is quite useful if you store lots of multimedia files in your laptop. It has the latest 7th Gen Intel Core i5 processor with 8GB DDR3 RAM.
Okay. Enough talk about the features. You may be wondering why I’m suggesting this laptop among others Right? Because there are 5 best things about this laptop which you may not find in others laptop in this category and I’m going to tell you now what are those things.
1. Insane Battery life:
Don’t think that I’m repeating the same features from MacBook Air. Just hear me out.
The average battery life of MacBook Air is 10 hours and the average battery life of the Asus ZenBook is 12 hours which is pretty extraordinary.
If you look at the close competitor of Asus ZenBook i.e Dell XPS 13, which also gives almost the same amount of battery life but it costs few hundred dollars than the ZenBook. (More comparison on point #4)
The crazy thing about this laptop is it weighs only 2.6 pounds (1.17 kg) which is extremely lightweight and helpful when you are on the go. If you are working in an office or even at home, you can write your stuff by carrying it anywhere.
Just to let you know this is the second slimmest and lightweight laptop on this list.
The 8GB RAM and Intel i5 7200 Processor running with Windows 10 will give you almost no performance issue whatsoever. Along with your writing stuff, you can also do video editing (not 4k), can perform lightweight games and more without almost no lagging issues.
4. Cheaper Price but PREMIUM Experience:
This is the most important thing I liked about this laptop. It is affordable and value for money laptop, unlike the MacBook Air which some people consider as overpriced.
Just like I said before, the closest competitor of the Asus ZenBook is Dell XPS 13 and now I’m going to compare both the laptops with their prices and some important features.
Asus ZenBook Dell XPS 13
|8GB DDR3 RAM||8GB DDR3 RAM|
|IPS Display||IPS Display|
|3 Ports, No thunderbolt||3 Ports, No thunderbolt|
|2.6 pounds||2.7 pounds|
As you can see, clearly there is a difference of $235 in pricing, no thunderbolt in Zenbook and the Zenbook is 0.1 LBS lightweight than XPS 13.
Not only this, there are few more areas where XPS 13 is better than the Zenbook. But you should ask yourself twice before spending extra $235 on the XPS 13.
My only complaint about the Zenbook is its screen bezels. When you compare the screen of Zenbook with XPS 13, the XPS 13 is way better because of fewer bezels. If you are not a fan of the bezel-less screen display, you won’t have any issues.
When you talk about display quality, Asus Zenbook gives tough competition for XPS 13. The Asus Zenbook produces accurate and sharp display and you’ll not have any issues in this department. In fact, the viewing angles are far better than the MacBook Air which I mentioned above.
Let’s talk about the final stuff, The GOOD and BAD of this laptop so that can you can make your final decision whether to buy this or save your money.
Bonus Tip: So these are my thoughts about this amazing ultrabook from Asus which may cost you around $700. By far, this one the best value for money laptop you can get for your blogging/ writing career.
The closest and cheapest alternative for the Asus ZenBook UX330UA would be Acer Aspire E5 by which can save at least $100 in your pocket. If you have the smaller budget i.e less than $600, this the last laptop in this list is perfect for you.
3. Acer Aspire E15 (Editor’s Pick)
If you are starting your writing career and don’t have a budget of $500 or more, then look no further because Acer Aspire E15 is one of the best cheap laptops for writers out there.
Acer Aspire E15 is the $350 laptop which provides decent specifications and features for its respective price and you won’t be disappointed with this.
This is the Best selling laptop on Amazon and more than 1600 customers have reviewed this product alone.
It comes with 15.6 Inch Full HD display which provides a decent screen and good viewing angles.
It has 1TB Hard disk which is more than enough space for both personal and professional usage.
It comes with Intel i3 7th Gen Processor and 4GB DDR4 RAM which can easily handle tasks like editing MS Word, Lightweight gaming, Photoshop, web browsing etc.
If the 4GB RAM is not enough for you, then you can add another 8GB RAM on this laptop by adding in an open slot. This Ballistix’s 8GB RAM is recommended for this laptop and it costs only $89. Here this is the simple tutorial on How to add more RAM in Acer Aspire 15.
So there you have it guys, a 12GB laptop which costs only $439 (350+89). I’m pretty sure you may not find a better deal for a 12GB laptop on the market right now. If you are satisfied with the performance of 4GB alone, you can keep your 89 bucks in your pocket.
One of the best things I liked about this laptop is, it comes with a Backlit keyboard just like the other 2 laptops on this list. It is very rare to find a laptop with a backlit keyboard at this price range.
The Acer Aspire E15 is a rare laptop which comes with a dedicated graphics card at this price range. It comes with GeForce 940MX which makes this one of the best laptops for writers and photographers out there.
Acer claims that the battery can last up to 12 hours, but you can expect around 6-7 hours with web browsing and writing. It comes with pre-installed Windows 10 Home which is one of the best OS of Windows you can use these days.
Below are some of the important PROs and CONs of the Acer Aspire E15
4. MICROSOFT SURFACE PRO 4: The most lightweight laptop for a writer
Before we talk anything about this Amazing surface pro, let me tell me you that This is not a budget or affordable laptop by any means. This is really an expensive and Premium laptop starting at the base price of $1300.
If you are just starting out your writing career, I highly recommend you to skip this laptop and choose any other laptop on this list.
Microsoft’s Surface Pro 4 can be used as either a laptop or a tablet. If you are a person who likes to roam around your home or office and write your articles, then this thing could be perfectly suitable for you. This laptop isn’t just for writing, it can do a lot more than that.blog
This is a 12.3 Inch screen tablet/ laptop with an amazing and high-quality screen. The viewing angles are also very good and the outdoor visibility of this laptop is pretty decent enough. Just like I said before if you roam around your office and write your stuff, you won’t have any issues.
If you feel the screen size is a little bit bigger for a tablet, then the surface pro 4 has a kickstand on the back side. The kickstand does a good job of keeping the device at your preferred angle.
There are total 8 different variants available for this laptop but I would recommend you to get the third variant i.e i7, 8GB RAM, 256 GB SSD. The reason I recommended you this variant is that you won’t have to face any performance issues.
Even though all the variants perform good for daily tasks but you need to get a laptop which is more than capable of doing daily tasks.
The base variant of this laptop i.e 4GB RAM version comes at $593 and the highest variant i.e 16GB RAM version comes at $2399. Let me remind you that this is the cost of only a tablet and a Pen. If you want to get the keyboard (which Microsoft calls it as Type Cover), then you have to buy it separately which costs $110.
Even though there is type cover for Surface Pro 4 available which comes with fingerprint scanner but I would suggest you get the type cover without fingerprint scanner.
Just like I said before, this is really an expensive device and I’ll suggest you think more than twice before buying this device. This is the most lightweight laptop on this list which weighs only 2.3 pounds (1.7 pounds tablet+ 0.6 Type pounds cover).
The keyboard which I talked about just now has the good build quality and have maintained good spaces between every button. The trackpad is build up to glass and it is extremely responsive. Surface Pro 4 comes with Windows 10 Pro.
Another great reason to buy Surface Pro 4 along with portability is its PixelSense technology. Writers do a lot of research works and they can’t save some important things immediately. That’s when Surface Pro’s Pen comes handy. You can write and save your important notes anytime you want.
Let’s talk about the most important thing about this laptop, its BATTERY LIFE. Microsoft claims that it can last up to 10 hours but actually it’s not the case. According to the TESTED, the battery can last up to 8 hours of online streaming and 6.5 hours of web work.
Some users have also reported that they got battery life close to 6 hours only which is really not acceptable from Microsoft. They should have provided a laptop with at least 8 hours of battery life for this price tag.
5. HP Notebook 15-ay011nr
This HP Notebook ay011nr is neither a cheap laptop nor an expensive laptop. This is an affordable and value for money laptop which is perfectly suitable for writers.
It comes with a 15.6 Inch display which is more than enough for a writer to perform research and write articles. It is not a world class design laptop but it has a decent design which does justify the price.
It has a massive 1TB HDD storage, 8GB DDR3 RAM paired with Intel i5 processor clocked at 2.3GHz. It comes with pre-installed Windows 10 home.
Not only writing, you can do photo/ video editing, occasional gaming, and much more stuff without thinking about the performance issues.
The crazy part about this laptop is its pricing. All these features which I talked about this laptop will cost you under $550. This is seriously a bang for your buck laptop without any doubt.
6. Lenovo ThinkPad T460: A laptop with longest battery life
The ThinkPad T460 doesn’t have a stylish design but it has some powerful specifications which a writer would need on their laptops. It has 14 Inch display with full HD resolution and has decent viewing angles too. This is actually a business laptop which is very lightweight and easy to carry on the go. The weight of this laptops is just 3.82 lbs.
It has a fingerprint reader to unlock the laptop and it has every essential port such as 3 USB 3.0, MiniDP, HDMI, Ethernet and dock connector.
This laptop comes with Windows 7 pro 64 installed in it. If you aren’t Okay with Windows 7 Pro, Lenovo provides you the option of upgrade to Windows 10 for free. You don’t have to worry about that.
There are total 6 variants available for this laptop on Amazon but I suggest you go for the 3rd model i.e 500GB HDD and 8GB RAM. Honestly, this isn’t the most affordable laptop out there. The variant which I mentioned costs close to $900. If you are impressed with specs of this laptop, you can go for more higher variants.
LaptopMag had confirmed that this Lenovo ThinkPad T460 has lasted 13 hours and 12 minutes which is outstanding I would say. This is one of the few laptops which have lasted more than 12 hours.
If you are a novel writer, chances are that you’ll write those stories in one sitting. For that you’ll need a laptop with long-lasting battery and that makes Lenovo ThinkPad T40 as one of the best laptop for novel/ fiction writers.
7. Dell Inspiron 15 i5558-5718SLV

This is one of the best things about this laptop. The display if touchscreen but I doubt if a writer would need a laptop with a touchscreen.
Both the touchpad and keyboard are nice and smooth. One thing to notice about this laptop is, it has a backlit keyboard. Many manufacturers ignore this useful even in a high pricing laptop but Dell hasn’t ignored it.
Just to remind you, this isn’t a gaming laptop. It comes with Intel Core i5-4210U with 8GB DDR3 RAM. It can easily handle lots of tabs in a browser, Microsoft excel/ word editing, playing videos or audios. But you can’t expect it to play HD games.
There is nothing to worry about the laptop for a writer. It has a beautiful design, sleek, fast performance and lots of storage i.e 1TB HDD. If you want to improve the of this laptop, just replace the HDD with SSD and you are good to go. An SSD can drastically improve the boot time, apps responsiveness and more.
Buyer’s guide for a Writer:
There are so many things to consider before buying a laptop for a writer but I’m going to highlight 5 most important things which will make you easier to decide which laptop you should buy right now.
1. Portability: No one wants a heavy laptop, even a writer. If you have a particular space for working (writing) and you don’t usually carry your laptop anywhere than your workspace, you can survive even with heavy laptops. but If you don’t have a particular workspace and you move around a lot with your laptop, you’ll definitely need a lightweight laptop such as ZenBook UX330UA-AH54 or Surface Pro 4.
2. Keyboards: This is one of most important thing every writer needs to consider at least once before getting any laptop. Basically, there are 2 kinds of keyboard out there i.e Membrane keyboard and Mechanical keyboard. The membrane is a soft type of keyboard and the Mechanical is a hard one.
You should always choose the Membrane keyboard if you want to write comfortably. If you choose a wrong laptop which doesn’t have a tactile feeling, it may cause some issue for you. All the laptops in this list have soft keyboards, so you don’t have to worry at all.
3. RAM: As a writer, I suggest you should choose a laptop which has at least 4GB RAM if you don’t want any performance issues. You can go beyond 4GB RAM if you can afford it. If you want the best 4GB RAM laptop for a writer, then definitely you should go for Acer Aspire E15 because it fulfills every requirement of a writer.
Except for Aspire E15, the remaining 6 laptops on this list have 8GB RAM which are pretty good too but it’ll cost you slightly more than the Acer Aspire E15. The more RAM you’ll have on your laptop, it’ll perform faster.
4. Storage: First you need to decide what type of storage you want on a laptop.
SSD or HDD?
Laptops with SSD will perform better but chances are it’ll come with less storage capacity Whereas laptops with HDD will perform slower than SSD but it’ll come with large storage capacity.
A 256GB storage could be sufficient for a writer. If you a laptop for both personal and professional purpose, 1TB would be enough in my opinion.
5. Battery life: If you get a laptop without researching its battery life, surely you’ll suffer a lot in many ways. Just like I mentioned before, if you are just like me who works from a single place, you can easily plug-in the charger and continue your work but that’s not the case if you are usually on the go.
For a writer, you should get a laptop which has at least an average of 5 hours of battery life. All the laptops on this list have more than 5 hours of battery life. The Lenovo ThinkPad T460 has the highest battery life on this list, lasting more than 13 hours.
For a writer, a GOOD and decent performing laptop is enough but these days writing paragraphs isn’t the only thing we do in writing Right?
We upload photos, videos, pdf etc in our article these days and we have to edit those files in any software. To perform those actions, you need to have more than a GOOD laptop for your writing profession.
If you have really a high budget, then Surface Pro 4 would be really the best option for you.
These are 7 Best laptops for writers anyone can get right now. If you have any better suggestions, I would like to hear your thoughts.
