Top 7 Laptops for Mechanical Engineering students in 2020
Note: Due to some restrictions, I can not add all the laptops in the table, hence I have added top 4 of them. You can read about other laptops within this post.
1. Lenovo Y700
This Lenovo Y700 is an affordable gaming laptop under $1000 for a mechanical engineer who loves to play games and wants to run some heavy programs.
The build quality of the laptop is reasonably good and it doesn’t have a cheap feel. The laptop comes with the 15.6-inch 1080P display. The display part of the laptop may not live up to expectations of many people because it has poor color accuracy. However, the viewing angles are decent. Overall, you can play occasional games and perform your daily tasks easily with this display.
Lenovo has offered 1TB Hard Drive and 256GB SSD on this machine which is a fair amount of storage for mechanical engineering students. You can save your projects and personal data on the Hard Drive and install games and important programs on the SSD drive. By doing this, you are unlike to face any major performance issues.
Talking about the performance, this laptop packs with Intel’s i7-6700HQ Quad-Core processor which delivers amazing performance for both simple and heavy tasks. When it comes to memory, you’ll get 16GB DDR4 RAM and it does a fine job handling multitasking without any issues.
As I said before, this is a gaming laptop but not the most powerful one. The laptop comes with GTX 960M GDDR5 VRAM which is good enough to play older games at very high frame rates and modern games at decent frame rates. The main thing which I want to mention here is, you shouldn’t expect this laptop to play heavy demanding games at a high frame rate.
The JBL speakers on this laptop are outstanding and I have to say they are one of the best at this price range. The keyboard on this laptop has red backlit which is quite useful in late nights.
The laptop is packed with lots of ports. On the right side, there are 2 USB 3.0, HDMI and Ethernet jack and on the left side, you’ll get USB 2.0 and a full-sized SD card slot.
The laptop is slightly heavy for a student who wants to bring it every day to school/ college. It weighs 5.7 pounds (2.6 kg). A laptop bag might be helpful to carry it with ease.
The battery life on this laptop isn’t great but not the worst either. You can expect up to 3-4 hours while doing general tasks like streaming YouTube/ Netflix, Word/ Excel or surfing the web. While running some heavy programs or playing games, you can expect around 1.5 hours which is decent I would say.
Overall, Lenovo Y700 is one of the best laptops for mechanical engineering students you can get right now under $1000.

2. ASUS VivoBook Pro 15 N580VD
This is another affordable gaming laptop from a well-known brand. Though it costs $100 more than the above Lenovo Y700 it has many good qualities than Y700.
You’ll get 15.6 Inch 1080P IPS touchscreen display which Asus claims to have 100% sRGB rating. Keep in that mind that this isn’t a convertible laptop. This is just a touchscreen laptop. Asus has also offered this laptop in 17-inch screen which may not be suitable for students who frequently travel with their laptops.
The build of the laptop is very good and there are no compromises in this department at all. The laptop weighs 5 pounds (2.27 kg) which is slightly lightweight than Lenovo Y700.
Coming to the storage part, you’ll get 512GB M.2 SSD and an empty 2.5-inch slot for HDD. If you opt for 17 inch model of this laptop, you’ll get 1TB HDD+ 256GB SSD. Either way, you can use a dual storage system on this laptop.
The laptop performs extremely well with the help of a powerful processor i.e Intel Core i7-7700HQ and 16GB DDR4 memory. You can also go for Intel i7-8550U Processor (17-inch variant) if you want faster performance. There isn’t a big pricing difference between those two models. One thing which I want to mention here is that, the laptop packs with fewer bloatware which indeed helps in performance.
This Asus Vivobook Pro comes with GTX 1050 GPU which performs relatively better than GTX 960M and handles most of the modern games at very decent frame rates. You can see the benchmark results of these two graphics on Game-Debate.
This laptop also has a backlit keyboard and offers a variety of ports such as USB 3.1 Type-C (Gen1), USB 3.1 Type-A, USB 2.0 and HDMI.
Asus has offered fast charging technology on this machine which helps the laptop to charge 60% in 49 minutes. You can expect 5 hours of battery life while doing basic tasks and 1.5-2 hours while performing some heavy tasks or playing your favorite games.
Surely, This Asus Vivobook is one of the top laptops for mechanical engineers which provides lots things at a reasonable price.
3. HP Envy 13- Lightweight laptop for Mechanical Engineers
The HP Envy 13 has beautiful 13.3-inch full HD touchscreen display which looks extremely gorgeous. The bezels in the display are very minimal but HP has decided to keep the top bezels as usual due to webcam placement. Keep in mind that this display may not be suitable for outdoor use because there is a lot of screen reflection.
The laptop has premium build quality which does justice for its price. This HP Envy is very slim and weighs only 2 lbs (0.9 kg). This is one of the best lightweight laptops for mechanical engineering students in my opinion.
You’ll get 256GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD and 8GB DDR3 memory. Though this laptop doesn’t have a lot of storage and RAM compared to the above two laptops still it performs smoothly and you won’t have any complaints regarding the performance of this machine because it comes with a powerful processor i.e Intel Core i7-8550U which does an amazing job while handling most of the tasks with ease.
Just to let you know, this isn’t a gaming machine at all. It comes with Integrated GPU i.e Intel UHD Graphics 620 which can play less demanding games at moderate frame rates. The ports you’ll find on HP Envy are 2 USB 3.1, 2 USB-C 3.1 and micro SD card reader.
HP claims to give 12 hours of battery life in video playback (or I would say moderate usage). But according to Monica, you can expect around 8 hours of battery life which isn’t bad at all.
4. Acer Aspire E15- The Best Value for Money laptop
Before I talk about this amazing laptop let me tell you that in terms of value, this is the best laptop for mechanical engineering students. Though other laptops on the list do also provide value for its money but not as good as Acer Aspire E15. In fact, this laptop has almost similar specs to the above HP Envy but there is a pricing difference of at least $100.
The Aspire E15 has 15.6-inch 1080P non-touch IPS display which has a very good color accuracy and viewing angles. It may not be as good as HP envy or XPS 13 but Acer has delivered a good display at this price.
There are lots of customization offered by Acer on this machine for both storage and RAM. By default, you’ll get 256GB SSD and an open slot to add additional SSD or HDD. I would suggest you to for another 250GB PCIe NVMe SSD which will cost you only $90 on Amazon.
The 8GB DDR3 memory offered on this machine manages every task smoothly but If you want to increase the performance, you can add 8GB more in the second slot. Here is my recommendation for additional 8GB RAM which will cost you less than $90. You can upgrade the RAM up to 32GB on this Aspire E15.
The processor you’ll find on this machine is Intel core i7-8550U which is a major difference between the older model and newer model of the Acer Aspire series. The latest processor surely outperforms the older one and kudos to Acer for providing this variant.
Unlike the above HP Envy, the Acer Aspire E15 has a discrete graphics card i.e Geforce MX150 which might be helpful while playing some games or running any heavy programs.
Here is the gaming performance of Aspire E15.
This is just a result of 3 popular games. If you are interested to know the results of some more games, I would recommend you to watch this video.
The ports selection of the laptop is decent I would say.
The laptop has an optical drive which not a lot of people use these days. It has also backlit feature in the keyboard which is a good thing.
The Acer Aspire weighs at 5.3 lbs (2.4 kg). I would recommend you get a bag for this laptop because a laptop with 2.4 kg isn’t easy to carry around.
And finally, the battery life.
Acer claims it can last up to 15 hours with a single charge. But that’s not accurate in the real world scenario. According to Turner, you can expect around 12 hours of battery life which means it can easily last a full day at school/ college with a single charge.
5. Dell XPS 13
I don’t think I need to give you an introduction to this amazing XPS series of Dell
The Dell XPS 13 9360 which I’m going to talk about is from late 2017 and not 2018 model. Though the 2018 XPS 13 model has been released and it is very good but I won’t recommend it for a mechanical engineer student as it is very expensive and not everyone can afford it.
The XPS 13 9360 comes with 13.3-inch full HD touchscreen display which is gorgeous and the color reproduction and viewing angles are great. The display has very tiny bezels which make the laptop very attractive.
The body of the laptop is made out of aluminum and keyboard and trackpad area are made from carbon fiber. This is a well-built laptop and surely it’ll give you a premium feel.
You’ll get 128GB M.2 SSD and 8GB DDR3 memory which is good enough to run multiple programs without any hassle. Though the 128GB may not seem enough for some students If you are getting the laptop only for college purpose, I don’t think you’ll face any issues.
One of the major changes between the latest XPS 13 and the older one is its Processor. Dell has upgraded the CPU from Intel Core i5-7200U to Intel Core i5-8250U. You can assume at least 10%-15% improvement of performance in the 8th Gen processor.
The keyboard in Dell XPS 13 is one of the best in the business. It works smoothly and at price range, I don’t think any laptop would beat XPS 13 in the keyboard department. The trackpad also works great which comes with Windows precision drivers.
One of the surprising parts of the laptop is, it has a Fingerprint scanner on the right side of trackpad which isn’t even mentioned in Amazon.
Have a look at that.
The fingerprint scanner works extremely fast without any issues. It is always a good way to unlock your laptop.
Dell has provided some useful ports on this machine and here are they,
1. 2 USB 3.0.
2. 1 USB Type-C (Thunderbolt 3).
3. A full-sized SD card slot.
In terms of portability, the XPS 13 is very lightweight which weighs only 2.7 pounds (1.2 kg).
And lastly, the battery life.
According to The Telegraph, it can last up to 15 hours but it is safe to assume 10-12 hours of battery life on average which is pretty extraordinary. You can bring this laptop to school/ college without worrying about charging it.
6. Dell Inspiron 15 7567- A gaming laptop for Mechanical Engineers
The Dell Inspiron 15 7567 is a masterpiece from Dell which costs only $800 and provides a great value for your money. Though Dell has made few compromises in this laptop, at this budget, they have offered lots of things than many other laptops.
Note: Dell has reduced the price from $900 to $800 now.
The laptop sports 15.6-inch full HD TN panel and this where Dell has made the major compromise on this machine. The color accuracy is okay and viewing angles aren’t so great on this display. If you aren’t too picky and okay with a decent display, then you may not have any issues.
The body of the laptop is made out of plastic mostly still it is very sturdy and rigid. I have to say the build is excellent considering its price.
The laptop performs very well and the 8GB DDR4 memory can be upgraded up to 32GB. Dell has offered 256GB SSD and an open slot to add a hard drive. Both storage options are easily upgradeable/ replaceable.
The processor on this Inspiron 15 is slightly weaker compared to some other laptops here. As I said earlier, Dell has to compromise a couple of things to offer this laptop at this price and they have provided Intel Core i5-7300HQ at this budget. The processor may not as powerful as other laptops but still, it performs reasonably good and perfectly suitable for daily tasks or even heavy duty tasks.
When it comes to gaming, the GTX 1050Ti have offered on this laptop. This is the most powerful GPU on this list which can perform up to 25% faster than GTX 1050. A popular game like Overwatch can play at 100 FPS in high settings and Titanfall 2 can play at 60 FPS in high settings.
If you want a laptop with powerful graphics at this pricing, then this the Dell Inspiron 15 7567 is one of the best options for you right now.
The keyboard has red backlit and one thing which is worth mentioning here is that this isn’t a lightweight laptop at all. It weighs 6.6 (3 kg) and it is the heaviest laptop among 7 laptops on this list.
The laptop can last around 6 hours while using it for entertainment purpose and while running heavy demanding programs or playing games, you can expect around 1.5 hours of battery life with a single charge.
Overall, The Inspiron 15 7567 is one of the top laptops for mechanical engineering students.
7. MacBook Air
The last laptop on this is from Apple which is quite different from typical Windows laptops.
I could have suggested you the latest model of MacBook Air but that’s very expensive and doesn’t provide value for its money as this model. The laptop which I’m going to recommend is 2015 model yet it is worth considering before buying any other laptop in this budget.
The design and display of the MacBook Air haven’t changed from the last couple of years but still, it has decent color accuracy and the design is quite attractive even in 2019. The resolution of the display is different from other laptops. It has the resolution of 1440×900.
The laptop weighs only 3 lbs (1.36 kg) and this is one of the major reason I have picked this laptop for a mechanical engineer. There’s no need to get a laptop bag when you have a lightweight laptop like MacBook Air.
In terms of storage and memory, you are getting 128GB PCIe SSD and 8GB DDR3 RAM. The SSD is really fast and performs very well. The RAM handles every task without any hassle.
The CPU inside the machine is 5th Gen Intel Core i5 processors which are slightly weak but they do a fine job while performing any heavy tasks and you won’t have to face any problems.
The laptop runs on Mac OS X which is completely different from any Windows OS. Apple optimizes the OS X to run most of the software smoothly and they do a great job at this department. If you are fed up with Windows laptops, I think you should definitely give a try to Mac OS to experience a different type of performance in a laptop.
The laptop doesn’t have a dedicated GPU and has only integrated graphics i.e Integrated Intel HD 6000. You can play some less demanding or some older titles at decent FPS. MacBook Air isn’t meant for gaming so you can’t a lot from this laptop.
And finally, the battery life.
In my opinion, this is the best part of MacBook Air. Apple claims to give you a 12 hours battery life but According to Laptopmag, you can expect up to 14 hours of battery life which is outstanding. If you are looking for a laptop with good performance and a very long battery life, I think MacBook Air is one of the best options you have right now.
After spending lots of hours, I have chosen these laptops for mechanical engineers which could match their needs and helps them in their studies.
Though there are many good laptops on the market which are better than these 7 but I have restricted the budget between $1000-$1100 so that every student can afford a good laptop based on their requirements.
These 7 best laptops for mechanical engineering students are capable of running appropriate software mentioned at the beginning. In fact, it can do more than that. So what do you think of these laptops, which is your favorite one and which one would you recommend to your friends? Do share your thoughts in the comments.
