Top 8 Laptops for Ubuntu in 2020
1. Acer Aspire E15: Cheap and Best Laptop for Ubuntu
If you are an old reader of HuntLaptop, you may know that I’ve suggested the Acer Aspire E15 in many posts and that’s because it provides great value for money. You are getting some of the premium features and specifications at just $800 which is a great deal in my opinion.
The Aspire E15 comes with 15.6 inch IPS display which has good color accuracy and viewing angles. The build quality of the laptop is reasonably good considering its price. The design of the laptop may not attract everyone as it has a basic and simple design.
Running the latest Ubuntu 18.04 on this machine isn’t a big deal at all as it comes with powerful specifications. Acer has offered Intel’s 8th Gen Core i7 processor i.e Intel Core i7-8550U which is good enough to run Ubuntu flawlessly. The laptop also comes with 6 core processor i.e Intel Core i7-8750H which can perform faster but it’ll cost you $150 more than this model.
When it comes to storage, you’ll get a 256GB SSD and an open slot to add a Hard disk drive or an SSD as per your wish. I would recommend you to add another 256GB Solid State Drive which will cost you only $90 on Amazon. The 8GB DDR3 memory does a fine job while doing multitasking but if you want to upgrade it, then you can add RAM in the extra slot offered on this machine.
Acer has packed this laptop with dedicated graphics i.e GeForce MX 150 which might not a powerful GPU but you can play some low to moderate demanding games at decent frame rates.
Take a look at the gaming performance of this machine.
The ports selection on the laptop is good but it should have been better in my opinion.
The laptop weighs 5.3 lbs (2.4 kg) and I won’t say this is a lightweight laptop. It is better to get a bag for this laptop if you want to carry it with yourself.
Lastly, the battery life.
Acer claims to offer 15 hours of battery life on this machine but realistically, you can get 12 hours of battery life according to Mr. Turner. I would say for an $800 machine, this is an outstanding battery life.
Overall, The Acer Aspire E 15 is one of the cheap and best laptop for Ubuntu in 2019 and I’ll highly recommend it If you don’t have a four figure budget.

2. ASUS ZenBook UX330UA-AH55: A lightweight Laptop for Ubuntu
The ASUS ZenBook UX330UA-AH55 has almost similar specs like the above Aspire E15 but in terms of looks and design, this Zenbook is far better and stylish. This is a perfect Ultrabook for Ubuntu at a very cheap price.
The Zenbook comes with 13.3 inch IPS display which has decent color accuracy but has poor viewing angles. The overall build quality of the laptop is good. In terms of designing, the Zenbook is similar to Apple’s MacBook Air.
Asus has offered 256GB M.2 SSD which has read and write speed of 530MB and 504MB respectively. The 8GB DDR3 memory does a fine job in multitasking and the processor you’ll be getting on this machine is Intel’s 8th gen processor i.e Intel Core i5-8250U. At a price of just a little over 700 dollars, this laptop is packed with powerful specifications which are outstanding I would say.
You won’t be facing any issues while running Ubuntu on this machine as it also comes with a discrete graphics card i.e GeForce MX 150 which is the same GPU which comes with the above Acer Aspire E15.
If you are planning to use this laptop in outdoor conditions or while traveling, then you can easily do this as it weighs only 2.6 pounds (1.2 kg). You don’t even need a bag to carry this lightweight machine. The ports you’ll be getting on this machine are 2 USB 3.0, 1 USB Type-C, an SD card reader and mini HDMI port.
And finally, the battery life.
While using for general purpose such as entertainment or surfing the web, then you can expect around 11 hours according to Justin. While performing some heavy demanding programs, you can get between 2-3 hours of battery life.
3. Acer Chromebook 15
If you have heard about a Chromebook before then you might know that you are limited to use only Chrome OS in a laptop but many people don’t know that you can also use Ubuntu in a Chromebook. Follow this official Ubuntu guide to use Ubuntu on any Chromebooks or watch this video to learn about that.
If you are hearing about a Chromebook for the first time then let me tell you briefly that “It is an operating system designed by Google and majority of the tasks can be done only if you have a working internet connection”. Learn more Chromebook on DigitalTrends.
If you are an Ubuntu lover and want a laptop to use it for only simple tasks, then a Chromebook might be handy for you. This Acer Chromebook 15 will cost you only a little over $200 which is quite affordable for many peoples in my opinion.
Okay, now let’s talk about the laptop itself now.
The Acer Chromebook 15 comes with 15.6 inch IPS panel which has good viewing angles, unlike the above Asus Zenbook. Acer has offered this Chrome in 2 variants i.e 16GB SSD/ 32GB. I know that these storage options won’t be good enough for a normal consumer but as I said before this isn’t a regular laptop and meant only to simple tasks.
The Intel Celeron 3205U and 4GB DDR4 memory are good enough to perform some lightweight tasks. You can’t expect a super fast performance on this machine but overall it can deliver a decent performance as a Chromebook.
The ports you’ll be getting on this machine are 1 USB 2.0, SD card reader, USB 3.0 and HDMI. The laptop weighs 4.8 lbs (2.17 kg) which isn’t easily portable in my opinion.
The battery life on this machine is between 5-6 hours which isn’t very impressive but you can get a little over half a day at school/ college if you are planning to use there.
4. MSI GV62
If you are looking for a mid-tier gaming laptop then the MSI GV62 is one of the best choices you have right now. It has powerful specifications at an affordable price.
The MSI GV62 comes with15.6 inch full HD display which is good enough for daily use for both professional and personal purpose. The build quality of this machine is solid and sturdy which is a good thing.
MSI has decided to offer this laptop with 1TB 5400 RPM hard disk drive and 16GB Intel Optane memory. To be honest, the HDD will be quite slow for users these days but the 16GB Optane memory helps the system to boot up in just 10 seconds which is quite amazing. The 8GB RAM also helps while doing any tasks simultaneously.
One of the best things about this laptop is, it comes with less bloatware which will surely help to in the performance of the laptop.
The CPU inside the machine is Intel’s 8th gen processor i.e Intel Core i5-8300H which is slightly better compared to the processor comes with above Asus Zenbook. MSI has also delivered this laptop with dedicated graphics card i.e GTX1050 Ti which is quite powerful and you can play almost any games at decent frame rates.
The MSI GV62 weighs exactly the same as the above Chromebook i.e 4.8 lbs. Considering it as a gaming machine, I have to say it is not as heavy as many other gaming laptops on the market now.
Lastly, the battery life.
According to mismom, you can get 4 hours of battery life at maximum. This might the case of both lite and heavy usage. If you are doing any simple tasks, you may expect a little longer than 4 hours.
If you are looking for a decent gaming machine under 800 dollars, then i have to say this MSI GV62 is a good laptop for Ubuntu without much compromise.
5. Acer Predator Helios 300: Best Powerful Laptop For Ubuntu
You may have heard about last year’s Asus Predator Helios 300 laptop which was quite successful and still it is one of the best selling laptops on Amazon right now. It offered quite powerful specifications at a reasonable price and in 2019, Asus has delivered us the upgraded version of that laptop.
The latest Acer Predator Helios 300 would cost you $150 more than the previous model but it has some interesting changes and I have to say it is worth spending the money. If you can’t afford this one, then you should get the older model which is still a good laptop in my honest opinion.
The display of previous gen Helios 300 was not so impressive but this time Asus has improved the quality of the display. The sRGB rating of the display is 98% whereas the Abobe RGB scores between 60%-70% with the brightness of 320 nits. It is surely one of the best display on a gaming laptop you can get right now.
There are no major changes in the design of the laptop. You’ll be getting the same build quality with the plastic body which is still very good at this price range.
One of the major difference between the older model and the newer model is their processors. This time, Acer has decided to offer Intel 6-Core i7-8750H instead of a Quad-core Intel Core i7-7700HQ which performs quite better than the older processor. The older processor is still a good one but the newer processor has an edge over the older one.
In terms of storage, you’ll be getting 256GB PCIe NVMe SSD which has very good read and write speed of 1500 Mbps and 200 Mbps respectively. Acer has kept the same RAM i.e 16GB which is more than adequate to perform any kind of tasks.
This laptop also has the powerful graphics card on this list i.e GeForce GTX 1060 with 6GB GDDR5 VRAM. If you are a gamer who wants to play some powerful games, then this laptop might the perfect choice from this entire list. You can read the full review of this powerful GPU on PcGamesn.

The latest Acer Predator is weighed 5.5 lbs (2.5 kg) which are 0.4 lbs lightweight compared to the older model.
The battery life on this machine is not so amazing in my opinion. You can get up to 3 hours of battery life by using it for lightweight and moderate demanding tasks.
Overall, This is one of the best ubuntu laptop you can get in 2019 as it provides real value for money and offers powerful specifications.

6. ASUS ZenBook Pro UX550VE-DB71
The ASUS ZenBook Pro UX550VE-DB71 is another mid-tier gaming from Asus which comes with a powerful hardware. This isn’t a perfect gaming laptop but it can play some heavy demanding games at appropriate settings.
The build quality of this laptop is reasonably is good and better than its previous models. The 15.6-inch full HD display has decent color accuracy. It offers the sRGB rating of 99%, Adobe RGB rating of 77% and 280 nits.
The 512GB SSD offered on this machine performs really great. It has a very good read and writes speed of 2700 Mbps and 1550 Mbps respectively. Just like the above Helios 300, you’ll be getting the same 16GB DDR4 memory and Intel’s 7th gen Core i7 processor i.e Intel Core i7-7700HQ. But one major to note about this laptop is, you can’t upgrade/ replace the RAM as it is sorted on to the motherboard.
The graphics card offered by Asus on this machine is GTX 1050Ti which may not be as powerful as the above GTX 1060 (in Helios 300) but you can play games by adjusting their settings at decent frame rates. Other than that, this laptop is also suitable for content creators, video editors etc.
The thermal throttling on this laptop isn’t very good. While playing games for a longer period of time, the laptop gets heated which isn’t at all a good thing. Asus should have delivered this laptop with better heating management.
The Harman Kardon speakers sound really amazing and at this pricing, it is really a good speaker in my opinion. The laptop weighs only 4 lbs (1.8 kg) which is reasonably lightweight and portable if you travel with it occasionally.
According to Bron, you can expect more than 8 hours of battery life while doing tasks like browsing, watching movies, lightweight gaming etc. You can get more than 10 battery life if you are it using for browsing only which is quite amazing.

8. Dell XPS 13 (2018)
Dell released its latest XPS 13 laptop earlier this year with few minor changes. It may not be affordable for everyone as it costs a little over $1600 but it is worth spending money if you have this kind of budget.
From the first look itself, you can tell that this is one of the best-looking laptops on the market. It is slim, attractive and display quality is amazing. The viewing angles on this gorgeous 13.3-inch display are great and there is nothing to complain about.
Dell has offered 512GB PCIe SSD which is good enough for many people and the 16GB DDR3 RAM will ensure you that you won’t face any performance. You’ll be getting the same processor which is being used in the Acer Aspire E15 i.e Intel Core i7-8550U. It is a perfect combination of a lightweight yet powerful laptop.
The ports selection of this machine is just Okay in my opinion. On the left side, there are 2 USB Type-C Thunderbolt 3 ports with 4 PCI-e lanes. You can connect an external GPU via this USB to play some hardcore games. On the right side, there is 1 display port and a micro SD card reader. If Dell had offered at least one USB Type-A port, then it would have been very useful.
The Dell XPS 9370 weighs 2.9 lbs (1.3 kg) which isn’t at all hard to carry with yourself while traveling somewhere. This is one of the ideal notebooks for Ubuntu in my opinion.
And finally, the battery life.
According to Dave, you can expect a little more than 10 hours while using it for lightweight tasks. The battery life while doing heavy tasks might not be the same as it consumes a lot of energy.
